The psychedelic drug psilocybin – found in “magic mushrooms” performed just as well as a widely used antidepressant in easing the symptoms of major depression, and outperformed the common prescription medication on a range of secondary measures, results of a small-scale phase II study show. In a 6-week trial that included 59 patients with moderate-to-severe depression, there was no significant difference between the impact of high-dose psilocybin and that of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) escitalopram, sold under the brand name Lexapro.

A local combat veteran who struggles with PTSD founded an organization to push for the decriminalization of "magic mushrooms" and other natural psychedelics in Colorado Springs. Anthony Caballero served in the Army for four years and survived blasts from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). As a result, he suffered from traumatic brain injury, and began dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Caballero said he had suicidal thoughts when he returned home.

A New York lawmaker is proposing to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms in the state. Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D) introduced the reform legislation on Monday. It would amend state statute by removing psilocybin and psilocin—two of the main psychoactive ingredients in so-called magic mushrooms—from the list of controlled substances.

Spokane could soon join the growing number of cities and states that have decriminalized psychedelic mushrooms. A new initiative would effectively end local enforcement of federal laws in the city of Spokane against the possession of psilocybin, a psychedelic drug naturally produced by what are commonly referred to as “magic mushrooms.” The initiative was filed with the Spokane city clerk by attorney Pat Donahue and Mason Lord of Decriminalize Spokane in February.
